Skateboarding started out as an alternative to surfing, initially conveying the same 'hang loose' mentality. As skating grew more into it's own thing it claimed more territory in suburbs, leaving marks for all to see. The public didn't respond nicely to such outlandish behavior which in turn solidified skateboarding as a counterculture. 'Skate and Destroy' and similiar Slogans, while conveying a vital and valid resentment, didn't help its perception either.
To this day every structure and entitie that are common in other athletic endeavors are somewhat frowned upon - competitions and coaching in particular.
What this negativity fails to take into consideration is that everyone has a different take on what Skateboarding means to them. Having fun and being expressive, being entertaining and interactive, chasing thrill and excitement or strive to being the best you can - this and much more is skateboarding. With the later, coaching can be a viable way to unlock ones athletic potential to its fullest.
Melvin is a great example for it. He first entered the rookies division in 2020 finishing 2nd. A year later he was crowned the EFSC rookie Champion. A result of great advice and most importantly, hard training. Building a solid foundation of divers tricks and performing them consistently and technically correct is the feat of a great Contest Skater and Melvin certainly delivers all three of those things remarkably.
Stepping up into the Amateur division last year hasn't been to shabby either, coming in 2th. A top 3 finish! 👍
Developing a unique style and tricks takes time so there's still plenty of ways for him to grow as a skater and if one can pull off a consistent performance into competitive skating, its him!
Melvin thank you for sticking with skateboarding and not give into temptation of more established sports. 🤾♂️⛹️♂️
